Kit List
Above: John and Rev keep an eye out for trouble at Cage Amherst.
When the Sea Devils were first formed it was decided that the unit should have some form of uniform, a set of clothing and equipment that all members would wear or use. The reasons for this were threefold: to differentiate us from the general DPM rabble found at the majority of safezones around the country, to indicate to others that we're taking our Airsoft a bit more seriously than most, and because we think it looks cool. Therefore all members of the team adhere to a relatively flexible dress code: the Kit List!
For those joining/thinking of joining the Sea Devils, you need to know what kit to buy and where to buy it; this is where you'll find that information. We've tried to keep the kit as easy on the pocket as possible, or suggest a type of item that can be sourced from a number of different suppliers in order to obtain the best deal: this outfitting doesn't have to be costly...
Clothing
First on everybodies list should be the Austrian pattern BDU. This is the only must-have for the team and is used for both woodland and CQB skirmishing. The BDU is readily available from The Combat Store (www.thecombatstore.co.uk) where a temperate jacket and trousers will set you back the princley sum of £36. One Sea Devil patch (purchased from the team for £4 each) should be placed on the right shoulder of the jacket and one Union Flag patch (also sourced from the team, although this is a freebie) should be placed on the left shoulder. The addition of a black or an Austrian pattern t-shirt underneath the jacket is recommended for warmth and protection and is available from most surplus retailers.
The addition of a summer uniform is a relatively new development for the team and so has not been adopted by all, however it is acceptable to wear it if not otherwise asked to wear the Austrian kit. The summer uniform comprises a temperate shirt and trousers in German desert camouflage (known as Tropentarn) which can be acquired extremely cheaply from a number of sources.
The use of headwear is purely up to personal preference. For woodland either Austrian/Tropentarn pattern or OD headwear is acceptable and can range from helmets with appropriate covers, watch caps, berets (Austrian pattern only), baseball caps (not meshback), bandannas (if strictly necessary), M43s and boonies. For urban when not wearing a helmet similar headwear may be worn but the colour should be black.
Any type of combat boots are acceptable as long as they're black. We prefer Magnums but there's some good quality boots available without the price tag associated with HiTec, so shop around.
Additional items include wet weather gear and cold weather jackets: for when it rains we recommend an OD Poncho or cape (available from most surplus retailers), and Austrian camo parkas are available for the winter months from East West Trading (http://www.ew-trading.co.uk/Euro_jacket_5.htm) for the knockdown price of £15.
Load Carrying Equipment
The Sea Devils currently have two loadouts: one for Urban environments and one for woodland.
Woodland
We realise that every player is different, and that personal freedom to choose ones own equipment is part of the fun of airsoft, therefore personal load bearing equipment for woodland use can take any form from webbing to chest rigs to tactical vests and body armour, but all must be olive drab in colour. The setup of your load bearing kit is also entirely up to you: other members have customised theirs to utilise odd size pouches or remove unwanted holsters, so if you prefer a particular configuration of pouches/clips/sundries it's all acceptable... as long as it's OD. It is also required that a nametape stating your surname (not your net handle) be visible on the front as well as a Kentish "Invicta" patch (sourced from Mark).
The current fashion within the team is for modular vests and rigs: these can be procured from just about any surplus retailer now for a variety of prices. Some sources of note however are the ASCUK Forum Classifieds (http://www.airsoftcommunity.co.uk/forums/Camo-and-Gear-f6.html) which can provide the occasional bargain for tactical wear, Flecktarn.co.uk (www.flecktarn.co.uk) which offers a number of different load carrying solutions for the buyer with some money to burn and the Ebay store EHobbyAsia (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/eHobby-Asia-Airsoft-Supplier_W0QQsspagenameZL2QQtZkm) which, for the budget conscious, can provide some excellent kit for pennies. Nametapes can be bought extremely cheaply from 1800nametape.com: from the law enforcement section ask for 3 x subdued (black text on OD tape) and 3 x coloured (silver text on black) tapes, and it should set you back no more than $7.05 per person with next to nothing in P&P (no taxes to be paid either).
CQB
The watchword here is protection: with regard vests we recommend either the Guarder LA SWAT vest which is available from most HK retailers (but the price is good from ZeroOneAirsoft.com here in the UK) or the similarly styled LAPD modular tactical vest (a bargain from AirsoftScotland.com) because they will protect you, but any black vest will do at a pinch. Again they must display a nametape (see above).
Odds 'n' sods
For CQB we recommend the use of PASGT replica helmets in black or with a black fabric cover (available from Flecktarn) and we tend to use riot police leg and arm protection which we've picked up from a variety of places (the team can advise on a source of these items if you require them); these are for added protection but also have the virtue of looking kinda sweet.
The only other item is a personal radio: we are licenced for UHF radios set to our specific team channels (UK General channels 449.3125 / 449.400 MHz 123Hz CTCSS) which can be obtained for approx. £40 from places like Ebay. With regards headsets, speaker mics etc. there's no official convention; if you want to use one just find one that fits comfortably on/in your ear and stick with it.
Weapons
Due to the fact that guns are possibly the most expensive items we require to play, there is no enforced convention with regard weapons; any member can use anything they like. Currently G36 variants, Minimi and AKs are quite popular with the team for woodland skirmishing and G36Cs,P90s & MP5s are used for CQB.
